A chiropractor is a doctor of chiropractic that has graduated from an accredited university or college with a doctoral degree. Chiropractic is categorized as complementary and alternative medicine. Coursework in the chiropractic program is similar to what students learn in medical school but without extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals.
Chiropractors work with a wide range of healing modalities and offer patients stacks of information to read about healing risks, benefits, and alternative healing options. Patients come into treatment looking for healing from neck or back pain caused by poor posture, accidents that led to injuries years ago, and sports-related injuries.
In addition to hands-on healing, chiropractors may focus on wellness and health promotion.
The scope of chiropractic encompasses a wide range of methods and techniques. A typical session begins with a chiropractor performing an analysis of the spine and nervous system to determine whether the patient needs care. Patients are asked to fill out a comprehensive questionnaire about their medical history before this appointment so that the doctor can be aware of any conditions that may interfere with healing or complicate treatment options. In many cases, x-rays will also be taken at this time for better diagnosis.
Some doctors offer stress reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, massage, aromatherapy, and acupuncture in addition to more traditional services such as spinal adjustments and exercises.
After the chiropractor has performed an assessment, they will discuss their findings with you and present a treatment plan. Treatment may involve spinal manipulation to correct misalignments, corrective exercises to strengthen muscles, relaxation techniques or an exercise program to be performed at home that is customized for your specific healing goals.
A chiropractic adjustment is performed when a doctor manipulates and mobilizes joints and bones in and around the spine using controlled pressure. This is done to improve motion, relieve pain, increase blood flow, promote healing of injuries, release toxins from the body and relax muscles. Some patients are advised to do nothing but rest.
A healing energy adjustment flow refers to healing energies that enter into the body via multiple means which can be changed into electrical currents that are then applied to nerves below the skin’s surface, ultimately causing particular muscles to contract or relax. Such healing energies can be created by magnets placed against specific points of the skin, acupuncture needles inserted at different points along the body meridians, or even with healing hands.
Chiropractors claim they can locate and correct misalignments of the spine and other joints to remove interference with the nervous system and restore health and healing.
Whether or not you believe in chiropractic healing methods, the careers of chiropractors are on the rise. New positions in hospitals and physician’s offices mean many chiropractors have discovered new healing opportunities beyond working in their own well-equipped offices or clinics.
Chiropractors are becoming more widely accepted as providers for workers’ compensation claims, auto insurance claims, lawsuits resulting from accidents caused by negligence, slip/trip/fall injuries, etc. By performing x-rays before any treatments are begun to determine whether there is something that needs healing, there has been a reduction in the number of unnecessary treatments performed.
